Today I woke up and went for a run that was long overdue. I would have run more but there is really nowhere to run here by our campsite. We had a great filling breakfast of eggs, sausage, hash browns, and pancakes on a stick (at least that is what I ate). Then we gathered ALL of our stuff together like we were going on an all-day adventure. That seemed to be the truth until we went to the grocery store. I stayed in the car because while we were eating breakfast I was downloading a movie called (World Trade Center), a pretty good movie but a little sad. The rest of the family took a good while to go in and out of the grocery store. After we got out of the grocery store we went right back home to offload all of the groceries. We finally decided to go to a lake so that we could do some fishing. At first we were fishing on the shore but mom realized that we couldn't cast our fishing poles far enough and the water was only a couple of feet deep. So then we decided to rent a small fishing boat and enjoy the lake from the actual lake water. It was a good decision, the only problem was that it was a very small metal boat and it was super unstable. So when everyone got up or walked around you knew it. It was great for fishing, even though we didn’t catch any, and also really good for picture taking and getting some nice B roll of the water. On our way back it started to rain which was really funny but it only lasted a small amount of time. Which is how the rain seems to work out here in Colorado. It just likes to be caught by surprise and then it goes away after it has had its fun.
The great Vallecito Lake
Since the family requested that we not have an agenda, we are flying by the seat of our pants. With no plans, we all slept in. My fitbit sleep score was an 82! That is the highest it has been in a long while. I got almost 7 hours of sleep so I’ll consider that a win. I can get used to being on vacation. We slowly got up and about, Mike made us breakfast burritos and we headed to Walmart for fishing licenses. The boys decided they wanted to try their hand at fishing for trout.
We made our way to Vallecito Lake. We went there in 2013 when we were on a different family vacation and we remembered it being a nice place to fish. The lake was smooth as glass and beautiful. It was a bit foggy and sprinkling when we first got there but the sun came out and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, the lake was so shallow by the shore that we didn’t get any bites so Mike wanted to rent a boat. There were only a few people at the lake so we had no problem renting a fishing boat. We loaded up our gear and set off across the lake. Once we were out of sight of the marina staff, Kyle drove. Besides trying to throw us off the boat with his intentional erratic driving, he did a good job being our tour guide. It was so beautiful seeing green everywhere. I took a lot of photos with my cell phone but it is so much nicer in person. We stopped a few times to fish but had more fun cruising the lake. Stephen didn’t fish, he brought his fancy camera and took lots of pictures of the landscape. He said he enjoyed taking pictures more than trying to catch a fish. An hour into our boat rental the skies turned black and it began to sprinkle again. 30 minutes later and it was a downpour. We headed back to the dock as fast as the little boat could take us and we laughed at how soaked we were. Despite the cold rain, it was a lot of fun to be out on the lake virtually by ourselves. There were only four boat trailers in the parking lot all with out of state license plates. Of course, as soon as we got off the lake the skies cleared up again. Unfortunately, we did not catch any fish despite my promise to pay the first person who caught something $5.
We headed back to the RV park and Kyle insisted that we stop in the office before it closed for some pie. Kyle got some apple pie and ice cream and ate that for dinner. As soon as we unloaded the truck and shut the RV door, it rained so hard the water was rushing down the streets in the park. Luckily, we decided to come home when we did. Kyle was bored out of his mind while we were waiting for the rain to let up. He checked out the main TV that we have never used since we could never get it to work. He took the back off the TV cabinet, found that a cable was loose and he fixed it. We dusted off the DVDs that were shoved in a cabinet and watched Snow Dogs. The rained stopped so Mike grilled us carne asada for dinner and we played a card game Kyle taught us called “chase the ace”. Kyle and I also played double solitaire. Mike and the boys decided to watch Let’s Be Cops (insert eye roll here) and I happily enjoyed quiet time getting caught up on this blog while they laughed hysterically at that silly movie. Tomorrow the plan is to do some mountain biking.
